Important information for Australian passport applicants

Due to increased demand for passport services, we advise you to allow a minimum of six weeks to get a new passport or renew one. For urgent applications, priority processing is available for $237.

How to apply for a new Australian passport

  1. Complete the online form or pick up an application form from a participating Post Office.
  2. Get your passport photos taken and have them signed by a guarantor/referee.
  3. Book an appointment at your nearest Post Office to lodge your passport. 
  4. Lodge your application at a participating Post Office.
  5. Pay the fee.

Renewing a passport

If you already have an adult passport, you may be able to renew it. Find out more about passport renewal eligibility.

Child passports

A parent, or somebody with parental responsibility, can lodge a child passport application. If aged 16 or 17, the child applicant(s) must come to the Post Office too. Find out more about child passports.

Adult passports

Standard adult passports are valid for 10 years. Applicants aged 75 years and over can apply for 5 year validity. Find out more about adult passports.
